I bought the 360 on launch day back in 2005 with cash. Camped out at Wal-Mart for 18 hours for it too. Again, didn't do this so some idiot could steal it :(

I suggest you buy a PS3 instead. With their sales numbers, it's obvious nobody wants one! Therefore, nobody will steal it!

(The PS3 is my favorite console, as everyone knows. I'm just making a joke. No need to move this post to console war. :P)

Disagree strongly. There are PLENTY of times when people are doing things that go perfectly with the video iPod (airplane travel, roadtrips, commuting via bus or carpool, just to name a few). Just because it doesn't fit into your lifestyle doesn't mean it won't be the greatest thing since sliced bread to a whole lot of others. When you miss a show you want to see (I still do occassionally, even with a DVR) it is AWESOME to be able to get it quick and easy on iTunes, at a pretty dang good quality.

Also, have you TRIED watching TV on an iPod. Even the current screen at 320x480 looks great with as bright and high resolution (per inch) as they've made the current iPod. If Apple really does go wide screen as so many are hoping, the picture may look nicer than a big screen TV (since any screen gets smaller the further you get from it).
Hey don't you watch Heroes? The Japaneese guy watches his porn on a iPod.

Well, then try to run Aperture on your PB. Good luck.

No money from me until MBP is state of the art. I'm not going to pay nearly $ 3.000 in January 2008 for a notebook without SSE4 and Blue-Ray.
    I just sold my shares.

    John:

My point was to ask the guy what exactly he does that demands that kind of firepower. Computers these days are overpowered for what 90% of the population does. However, Aperture is a perfect example of an application that needs more firepower... Thanks for pointing that out. It is a professional application that is useful, almost necessary, to professional photographers but a complete luxury for anyone else.

If you can justify the purchase of Aperture to manage images from your $10,000 mega-res SLR, then you can probably afford a desktop workstation to handle it... and write it off as a business expense.

But otherwise, I'm asking why does the poster in particular to whom I responded need more than that in a MacBook Air? Not because I want him to buy one. Clearly he could buy a MacBook or a MacBook Pro that better suits him. But you have to understand I see way too many people complaining every year that Apple hasn't produced the gadget to snatch up the money burning a hole in their pockets since... oh, a year ago when they bought that year's latest and greatest.

People say "I'm ready for a new computer" six months to a year after they just bought one... and I find that patently absurd when 90% of the time, the person speaking uses said computer for: internet, email, word processing, music and consumer photo/video.

    Good idea...

In terms of new stuff I think just the thin portable, as that's the only thing there's been any leaks/evidence for (the leaks usually have everything covered!)

The thin portable was a duh. Wasn't much else introduced, just the NAS thing. 8/10 then...

Other than that, refreshes - in order of likelihood: MBP refresh with the new keyboard (even tho I think it'd look a bit odd if it's white), 16GB iPhone (not 3G yet), Glossy ACD option, Cheap ACD option (watch for the gradients and poor quality!), MacBook refresh, maybe some tweak to the ATV, maybe a non Glossy iMac option (just to wind up those who bought an iMac and dislike it!).

The one I said was the most likely didn't happen. No iPhone update, no ACDs, no MacBook refresh, correct on the ATV tweak, no non-glossy iMac.
    let's give that 2/10..

Things I don't expect them to update: the iMac (already done recently), the Mac Mini (ditto and they don't like updating it), or any of the iPods (also too soon) or the Mac Pro or XServe (that would be silly, and the place would get firebombed)

    10/10 there :p

The house is a little bigger than those drawings depict, as there are stairs leading to a downstairs that is not shown. Probably to the 5th bedroom that is mentioned, likely a downstairs guest room of sorts or something.

Agree with everyone else though. Simple, not over the top. I like.

I like, too. I noticed the stairway leading downward as well. Could be a guest room or workout/fitness room.

In addition, I would wager that there will be a small server room/alcove down there: a Mac mini or Mac Pro server (mini is more likely), with a couple of external hard drives (Drobo, perhaps?), wired to the latest AEBS and positioned directly underneath the living room. This would allow running Ethernet up to the living room TV, equipped of course with the new :apple:tv. That provides a solid Gigabit connection for streaming movies, and plenty of WiFi bandwidth for the master suite. An AirPort Express, set to Bridge mode, will likely be placed near the three smaller bedrooms for better Wi-Fi coverage at that end of the house.

What these guys forget, and everyone else who proposes this, is the fact that OS X solely exists to sell Apple's hardware and not the other way around.

iLife, iWork, OS X, Pro Apps all have the single purpose of selling hardware. Apple is a hardware company by choice, it's what they want to do.

They are not a software house and I can't see them trading away their hardware business to gain OS X marketshare. It's not not what Apple is all about.

I think this is a bit of an over-simplification. Apple is a computer company. A computer = hardware + an operating system + software. This was always the way it was until IBM made their terrible strategic errors with the PC. Now we think companies like Dell make computers. They really don't -- they are Microsoft remarketers.

No the add is right. To many people drool over apple so they go with ATT. If you picked AT&T for the iPhone and knew the service was spotty in your area you loose all right to complain about it.

i get what your sayin, but nah, they can still complain all they want... i dont think it says in the contract be expected to have 30% dropped calls.

people complain not only to relieve themselves, but to eventually get whats right. (complaining on macrumors isnt exactly the best way of going about it, ill give you that)

This would NEVER Happen. but wouldn't it be an awesome treat if Apple added in an emulator that could run (and was pre loaded with) each major version of Apple OS's from the Apple I on. ! (and heck while we're dreaming, how about all the Next Step OS versions too)

It's in no way practical, but I'd truly geek out over it ! :)

Agreed! I was playing around with OS 9 the other night and it was fun and nostalgic :)

No, I mean a link to the actual file, not the streaming version. Some people know how to figure that out. Then it can be watched without choppy streaming when millions of us are watching at the same time.

    The "Only way" ?

What, you could not use a laptop?

And how would an iPad only owner read the CD in the 1st place?

Yes the iPad made a nice easy to use picture viewer once you had put the images on it from your real computer at home is what you are saying.

You could just of easy taken a laptop which read the CD images off directly onto the screen and no needed this new device whatsoever.
Wait, what, a CD? Do you come from the 90s? Why do you need to put it on a CD? Do you even know how this works? Do you know how heavy a laptop is compared to an iPad 2? Do you know how much it sucks to "just hand over" a laptop?

Blogging isn't journalism...Bloggers should be treated as they are - private citizens under no journalistic fact or ethics obligations.

Actually that is not quite accurate as bloggers are not people.

In any event, people need to lighten up. The self-righteousness exhibited in this forum would be quite amusing if it was not so sad. CES is one massive, pompous, over-wrought technology advertisement, and you are all crying at some schoolboy prank interrupting some guy's presentation.

And just to re-iterate, bloggers are non-professionals hacks that should never be taken seriously in any professional media circles.

Oooh. You're a software developer. That makes you an expert.

Except - as someone who is surround by IT professionals - many of which create systems that are governed by strict compliance issues - ALL of them have stated that 2MB is ridiculous for a cache of the intended purpose. And that QA could have missed this - but the fact that they did is really bad.

Look - defend Apple all you want. Don't really care. At the end of the day - a switch that is supposed to turn something off should turn something off. I know it. You know it. And Apple knows it - which is why they are (for WHATEVER reason) making the switch work correctly. End of story.

P.S. - Since Apple does great marketing and pr spin (my profession) - while I don't buy all the conspiracy theories at all - but neither do I "trust" Apple's altruism nor their rhetoric just because "they say so."

dude you do PR? couldn't tell.

all I am saying is that it is far more likely that this is a bug than intentional. if they wanted to do something intentionally to track people they could have hidden it very easily (and who knows if they do). I never said this was NOT a bug -- clearly it is. "End of story".

You should know that hindsight is 20/20. I am surrounded by IT professionals too -- and wait -- I am one (one who creates systems governed by strict compliance rules) -- one with lots of experience in software engineering and very senior with my company. I am sure that if I asked anybody today if they thought that file size was too large, they would definitely use their 20/20 hindsight to say "of course it is". I would.

But the fact of the matter is that these sort of things are exactly what can slip through the software development process. Most automated test cases are based around things that have already gone wrong (these are called regression tests) -- because you want to make sure you don't make the same mistake twice. It's likely that proactive "unit tests" around this code would have been written to trap the file size growing without bounds and filling up the device. Few would have thought to write a test to check how many records were being stored. Its exactly the kind of thing that is missed in the design process can make its way all the way into production. And, because of regression tests, the kind of thing that should not happen again.

I never said I trusted Apple's altruism. For all I know they are really tracking all of us -- it just won't be in a database stored on my phone. For all I know, AT&T is tracking me, as is Google, and Verizon. All have the capability based on my online Internet and wireless usage patterns and the devices I carry. I am just choosing not to be paranoid about it. This little "media scare" did not make me any more vulnerable to be tracked -- the means has been there for years. Incidentally, Google can read all my email too.

For somebody who doesn't "really care", your sure took offense to my pointing out that it was unlikely that this was some kind of Apple conspiracy. What would be a smoking gun would be finding personally identifiable location data on Apple's servers -- it would be very hard for Apple to talk their way out of that -- kinda like how Google tried to say "we didn't mean to gleam data off unprotected WiFi networks as we rolled our trucks by, we just happened to store it inadvertently." I'm sure somebody intended to keep that data -- it's kinda like accidentally starting a car and driving somewhere -- too many steps involved. Some idiot at Google did it and some smarter person realized the stupidity in it and they decided to come clean and destroy the data.

Apple used this tacky process you described becuase they obviously wanted to CONCEAL it from users, they certainly would not want the FEDS, Washinton and other agencies to know that they where doing it to them, whether or not they picked certain individuals is a matter Congress will settle, im sure if a mafia or cartel had this type of access they would also monitor wall street and join in on the scams.

And yeah Google does record but they at least give you the option to turn it off which makesd them liable if they intrude, Apple uses suckers and propaganda on forums and BS to cover up their sweatshop companies and 3rd party developers who probably helped them spy on competitors.

    <sarcasm>
Yeah definitely, and the worst thing about Apple is that the iPhone transmits a signal in the middle of the night that brainwashes the user into fully trusting Steve Jobs as his/her new leader.
    </sarcasm>

Please -- go hide in your basement bomb shelter. Just make sure the walls are lined with lead to protect you from those iPhone transmission signals.

So gizmodo is responsible for this how? Questioning what makes an online a journalist a journalist and not just a fan site has been going on for some time (aka: before gizmodo turned off a bunch of TVs). You're just scapegoating an easy target. If you have a problem with the conferences and expos limiting press to only a few big names go after that. Not after guys who like to prank people. You'll change nothing by attacking gizmodo.

I think what he is trying to say here is that we're all pissed at Gizmodo for possibly lending legitimacy to big media claims that online-only or blogger sites aren't real journalists, but rather fan sites. I'm not saying that everyone will think this, but the majority of the less-involved public could be swayed.

Pranks like this by Gizmodo just give them false credibility to their incorrect claims.

I would argue that many people lump all blogger sites into one group, neglecting to admit there are great differences from site to site. Right now, because these new players are not complete accepted yet, anything done by one has repercussions on everyone.

No they don't. They just attempt to copy (often badly), then license universally and flood the market with a lot junk that includes a ton of different models at very low price points.

The scary thing is is that you actually believe this nonsense.

I haven't read the thread..... but i had my first Verizon issue on monday. In my area i couldn't make a call.... i finally when to the Verizon store to see what was up.

    48 towers down.
    36 towers up.

And a ever so wonderful  saleslady that had the personality of a..... anyway, she was very rude about it. In fact, i told her, "Hey, drop the attitude, i'm a non-contract customer - don't make me want to walk elsewhere."

The analogy i used regarding her.... couldn't sell water to a fish. UGH.

It's been the only major issue with Verizon in the 15 years we've been with them really.... and it wouldn't have been as bad if my stupid Comcast internet had been functional. IT's been up and down since Saturday and i'm starting to lose it.

ANYWAY, the coverage map is the first thing i tell people to check when asking for input on a carrier. Then ask people you know how their coverage is where you live. It's the only thing that matters.....
